Peter's principle.... The Friday deep dive!

People get promoted outside their level of competence

Ahoy,

Welcome back to another Friday deep dive!

Don’t forget, you can now listen to the audio versions of these deep dives but hitting the “listen online” option in the header!

Let’s not waste any more time and we’ll dive straight in.

Here’s a quick review of this week’s scenario in case you missed it.

Sandra has recently been promoted to team leader. She has always been friendly, approachable and great at her core role. However, since her promotion, Sandra has become more distant, and some team members feel she is unapproachable. They have also noticed that she is more critical in her feedback, which has affected team morale.

  1. How would you approach Sandra to discuss the changes in her behaviour since her promotion?

  2. What impact do you think Sandra's new approach to leadership is having on team dynamics and performance?

  3. What strategies can Sandra implement to balance maintaining authority with being approachable and supportive?

Okay, so for this one I want to break down a concept called Peter’s principle.

Very simply, it is the idea that “people get promoted outside their level of competence”.

And this isn’t a unique thing.

This happens all the time, everywhere.

And honestly, it sucks!

It hurts the person getting promoted, it hurts their team and it hurts the organisation.

But for some reason, and I have no idea why, people do nothing about it?!
