Keep calm and onboard properly... The Friday Deep Dive

Today we’re training the new kid...

Ahoy,

Welcome back to another Friday deep dive!

Today we’re training the new kid.

Everyone’s favourite role I’m sure…

At some stage in your career you will be one of the three people involved in today’s scenario:

  1. The trainee

  2. The trainer

  3. The boss of one or both of them

Throughout the scenario, try and picture what it would be like in all of those positions and how you would want the other people to react.

Here’s a quick review of this week’s scenario in case you missed it.

David, a senior team member, has been mentoring a new hire, Emily. She’s been doing okay but has been struggling with remembering some of what David has been teaching, and struggling to meet some deadlines. David is getting frustrated and is feeling that his time is being wasted.

  1. How would you address David’s concerns while ensuring Emily gets the support she needs?

  2. What strategies can you implement to improve Emily’s integration and performance within the team?

  3. How can you balance the workload between David and Emily to optimize their productivity and professional development?

Like I said, today is about training.

If you’ve ever trained someone new to a role before, you know it can be frustrating, and it doesn’t matter how many times someone says “remember what it was like when you were in their shoes…” it’s still annoying!

Here’s a little insight to the mind of Reece here.

I am a slow learner. I need to hear the explanation in 3 different ways said 3 different times with some pictures for me to start to understand.

I am the worst nightmare of anyone trying to teach anything.

But then when I used to teach anything, I struggled to understand why people don’t get it after the first run through!!!

I found this particularly challenging when I was the deputy head of department training some of the new officers.
