Finding the gold in your team... The Friday deep dive

Going from average to excellent

Ahoy,

Welcome back to another Friday deep dive!

Today is about a really important aspect of being a leader: Spotting the gold.

It’s about seeing strengths within a team member and nurturing those strengths.

Here’s a quick review of this week’s scenario in case you missed it.

Alex, a member of your team, has been meeting the standard but not excelling. Recently, he has taken on a challenging task and shown a marked improvement in his performance, showing his creativity and problem-solving skills that were previously unnoticed. However, he seems to lack confidence in his abilities in his usual day-to-day role.

  1. How would you provide feedback to Alex to acknowledge his improvement and encourage more of this behaviour?

  2. What steps can you take to help boost Alex's confidence and ensure they recognize the value of their contributions?

  3. How can you leverage Alex's newfound strengths to benefit the team as a whole and inspire other members?

I guarantee you there are untapped strengths within your team.

We often spend a lot of time as leaders trying to get the team to achieve X, Y or Z. And some of the time, it doesn’t really matter who does what, as long as the project or the task is completed.

I think it would be a safe bet to say it’s not often that we look holistically at our team and delegate based off the skill set we know each member has.

Often we base it purely on their job role or related responsibilities.

To be fair, that’s how things have to start. However, a really effective leader will be able to notice the strengths in their team and adapt.

In this scenario we are just noticing some strengths but there is a little work to be done before we can really employ those strengths.
